Royale Island is part of little archipelago of Salut Islands (Iles de Salut), located 15 km. off the coast of French Guyana.
The islands were used as a penal colony from 1852 onwards, earning them a reputation for harshness and brutality. This system gradually phased out and has been completely shut down since 1953.
Nowadays the islands are a popular touristic destination. Much of their fame has to be ascribed to the famous autobiographic novel by Henry Charrière, Papillon. The author was imprisoned there for 9 years. Based on the novel was the film Papillon, featuring Steve Mc Queen as leading actor.
We visited Royale Island on 2nd and 3rd of June, 2012, making 901 QSOs with 43 divisions, in 40 hours of operations.

We was on the top of Royale Island, with clear view open on 360°. Wonderful propagation with Europe, during all the weekend. We also participated into Island Festival.
As antenna we used a 3 elements HB9CV.
RTX were Icom 706 and Kenwood TS50.
